I have recently made the decision to get my family to eat more healthy foods. With all of the stories I have been reading lately, I have learned that you really do not know what you are eating when you buy prepackaged foods from the store. It is sad that the US allows so many unhealthy foods that are actually banned in other countries. Artificial colors and sweeteners, pesticides, GMO foods, and other additives (in my opinion) are the reason so many people are getting more illnesses, allergies and diseases than ever before.
I started my journey by choosing to buy more produce and natural foods. I have been ordering my fruits and vegetables from Bountiful Baskets. This is a food co-op that is available in many areas. They take contributions on Monday and Tuesday. The boxes are then delivered on either Friday or Saturday depending on your location. We have had a lot of fun with the “surprise” boxes we get each week. You see, they have no clue what you are going to get when you place your order. Here are 2 examples of what I received. Each box is $15 plus a processing fee of $3.50 each week. You also pay an extra $3 for the first week you participate.
Not too shabby for $15 a week. As you can see, you get different items each week. They also have specialty boxes you can get. These also change weekly. I have gotten a case of cauliflower, case of broccoli, Shamrock box which included leeks, potatoes, onions, carrots, cabbage and parsley. These “extra” boxes are available for an additional fee.
I hope to post some of the recipes we have tried with our boxes to show you that, yes, you can eat healthier on a budget. We are also now buying raw fresh milk, yogurt and cheeses from a local dairy. Fortunately, we are able to do that here in Texas. If we weren’t able to buy raw milk items, then we would just have to get a few cows and make it all ourselves. There is nothing like homemade butter, yogurt and cheese. I love the idea of eating butter made from fresh raw cow’s milk. No artificial ingredients or junk included.
