I love it when my son helps me with meal planning and food preparation. Since he gets to choose the foods, we tend to eat quite a few kid friendly foods. Even though he just turned 5, my son loves to help me cook. He is still learning a lot about why things cook the way they do. It is so cool to him when things like rice and pasta come out soft after cooking. He also loves the way foods taste different with different types of seasonings. I love that he is learning to develop his tastes so early in life. With the abundance of fast food restaurants today, I hope that by teaching him to cook tasty, healthy meals that he will grow up and live a long healthy life.
When I was growing up, my mom always let us help in the kitchen. I used to make chocolate chip cookies on a regular basis for everyone with my own special recipe. Lucky for me, my son tends to eat more fruits, veggies, and healthy foods than he does cookies and sweets. I have always tried to teach him what is healthy and what is not. His school also helps reinforce my teachings. We try to cook with herbs and spices instead of salt based products. Since I have high blood pressure, we have to limit my sodium intake. I love knowing that he can help me cook healthy foods to keep me blood pressure stable. Maybe someday, with his love of cooking, he will be a famous chef or even a doctor!
In our search for good foods, he discovered rice. It has since become one of his favorite foods. It can be cooked in a variety of ways and with the right seasonings can complement quite a variety of foods, whether it be the main course or dessert. Uncle Ben’s is currently running a contest called Ben’s Beginners. They are on the hunt for parents of children ages 5-12 that will submit a video of themselves and their kids working together to prepare a rice-based meal. The prizes include $20,000 cash, an appearance on the Rachael Ray Show, and a $50,000 cafeteria makeover for the winner’s school! You can visit the Uncle Ben’s Facebook page for more information.
